		<description>Working with Karacters DDB we created a series of broadcast spots for Sprott Shaw College. The college underwent a huge transition in 2012; a rebrand and web relaunch, a name change, and the update of their iconic jingle known across British Columbia for almost 20 years. Needless to say, there was a lot of pressure to get it right and it was a lot of fun in the process!

Sprott Shaw College offers flexible programs for students with busy schedules and they have a great track record of graduates working in industry. It was important for us to tell stories that spoke to that history and it was a lot of fun to dive into the details to discover just how much the school has accomplished over the past 100 years.

The campaign included four different broadcast applications, in lengths of 00:30, 00:15, 00:10, 00:07.

Final Videos:

'Health' 00:30 -

'Business' 00:30 -

'Health' 00:15 -

'Health' 00:10 -

'Health' 00:07 -

Moodboard:
Karacters had already created the Sprott Shaw "compass" logo, style guide, and type hierarchies. We went through a research phase to gather inspiration for the depth and detail we wanted to achieve with each illustration. Eventually we decided on a clean 2D vector style that increased in detail and complexity on central objects or characters.

Pre-production
Early in the project we made the decision to develop the Sprott Shaw logo elements into four distinct visual landscapes. It was important that we pronounce the shapes and colours; a series of needles pointing in different directions, representing four main career groups at the college (Business, Health and Development, Tourism and Hospitality, and Trades).

Concept Development:
For each narrative, we developed "dream" scenarios that a potential student may encounter once they choose a career path. We asked questions like "Where would I want to work?", "What will I do for fun?", and "What is my vision of success?" Then we began sketching out each scene using the shapes composing the Sprott Shaw Logo. We examined the complex shapes that could be made when each shape is overlayed or smeared in motion.

Production:
Once we had established each of the career narratives we began iterating graphics within the Sprott Shaw shape and colour palette. Everything was meant to fit together in a single linear path, so we chose a snappy, circular, sometimes symmetrical style of animation to help flow from one scene to the next.

		<description>For the launch of their 'Smart Meter' program across British Columbia, BC Hydro wanted to create an energetic and informative animation that explained the features and benefits of their new device. Working with our client partner, 'The Autonomous Agency', we created an interactive microsite, an infographic animation, and short survey to better inform residents about the future of energy in the BC.

Moodboard:
&#60;img src="http://payload55.cargocollective.com/1/0/5421/3413770/AUT11_01_MoodBoard111124V1.jpg" width="640" height="383" width_o="640" height_o="383" src_o="http://payload55.cargocollective.com/1/0/5421/3413770/AUT11_01_MoodBoard111124V1_o.jpg" data-mid="17566567"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
In the beginning we wanted to create a monochromatic treatment in line with the traditional BC Hydro cyan and green, but we ended up adding some colourful highlights as the concept progressed. We drew a lot of inspiration from the work of Chad Pugh, creating fun little worlds inside larger graphics. We wanted the graphics to be subtle, hard edged, clean, and most importantly GREEN. Thanks to everyone in the attached board for your inspiring work! (If you have an issue with any of the images included, please send me an email)

As we developed our style frames and storyboards we decided to animate everything from a central, circular "hub" and use circles as a device to encase each of the graphics and transition from scene-to-scene.

Everything was produced with 'clean energy' and a energy smart future in mind. We developed a fun, springy animation style to maintain energy throughout the piece and transition cleanly to our metronomic cyan typography callouts in each section. The treatment turned into something a lot more playful than we'd initially planned, but BC Hydro encouraged us to go beyond their traditional style once they saw Emily's graphics.

		<description>For the 2011-2012 school year, the University of Alberta wanted to welcome students with an introspective video about their history and future. Along with Tribal DDB Vancouver we created an infographic about their student journey and the many milestones that students, faculty, and alumni have achieved.

Final Video:

Moodboard:
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/5421/2250071/DDB11_04_Moodboard110805V1.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="640" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/5421/2250071/DDB11_04_Moodboard110805V1_o.jpg" data-mid="11265329"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Drawing inspiration from the infographic style and a warm colour palette, we came up with a slightly textured, vector graphic approach composed of different levels (or vertically stacked layers). Thanks to everyone in the attached board for your inspiring work! (If you have an issue with any of the images included, please send me an email)

Building on the UAlberta mantra "The uplifting of the whole people shall be its final goal", we envisioned the university as a platform that helped individuals rise to their dreams. With over 100 facts and statistics; our solution was to craft all of the data into circular "nodes" or "modules" that, when growing together, form a structure beneath our central character. Using the existing UAlberta styleguide and a newly revamped website as inspiration, we illustrated a tower of statistics so diverse that new ones could be discovered upon each view of the video.

		<description>For the release of their annual 'Julekalender' (Christmas Calendar) Denmark's Radio wanted to create a fun christmas narrative with traditional Danish folk characters. Together they carry a calendar in the mail as they travel from winter wonderland to 'Christmas Island'. The only catch, all of the characters in this piece were part of a rigid diorama - we photographed what we could, but had to rebuild most of the characters from scratch. The result was a quirky stop motion/digital hybrid animation with a fun sense of nostalgia for kids and adults alike.

		<description>Anticipating the completion of BC Place's new retractable roof, their Human Resources department needed a video that spoke to the past, present, and future of the building. As well, they wanted to invite people to apply for a variety of corporate and event-day positions. We chose this bright, Las Vegas-inspired treatment to showcase the diversity of events one would experience under the roof of BC Place.

Update: Winner of a 2012 Applied Arts Design Award

Final Video:

Production:
The biggest challenge in this project was communicating the script without voice over - the project needed to function as well without audio as it did with. We chose a kinetic type treatment based on a style guide created by Karacters Design Group using the 'Houschka' font set and all of its variants. With those parameters in mind we went to work, illustrating hundreds of graphics and details based on the project theme 'Make Amazing Happen'.
